Sometimes it's good to remind oneself of things likely to
get lost in everyday's business. One important reminder comes from William
"Chip" Carter, Dean of Pittsburgh University's School of Law, whom I
visited a few weeks ago. On Chip's desk was that little sign obviously
reminding him (and other people running into his office) of what the school is all about. I
made use of this by posting a similar sign to my door (see photo).
Bucerius' "raison d'être" are its students. It
is fully designed around their needs, it was set up to attract and educate the
brightest and most talented law students in the country. No doubt, we are proud
of our strong faculty, its dedication to research and leadership in the
scientific community. We also appreciate the wonderful premises forming our
campus. And of course we believe that good management is a quality in itself,
being convicted that proper organization and leadership are key to the success of
a school and its role as a "thought leader". But they are all means
to an end, which is our students: We would not be here for faculty, management,
books or the lawn.
It is sometimes good to remind oneself - and others around
- of this crucial point of view. Be that at Pitt or Bucerius.
